About the project
Agrivoltaico Brasil is an open initiative to map and share agrivoltaic projects throughout Brazil. Combining solar energy with farming strengthens rural sustainability, diversifies revenue for producers, and accelerates the country's energy transition.
The platform grows thanks to researchers, farmers, and entrepreneurs who share their experience. We keep the map alive and constantly updated so it can inspire new ideas, partnerships, and studies.
Want to add a new project?
If you take part or know about an agrivoltaic initiative that is missing here, send the data so we can include it. Share the location, installed capacity, cultivated crops, and other useful details in the form.
Add a projectFrequently asked questions about agrivoltaics
Short answers to the most common questions about agrivoltaic systems and about the data gathered on this platform.
- What is an agrivoltaic system?
- An agrivoltaic system combines solar power generation and crop or livestock production on the same plot of land. The modules are raised or spaced so that farming keeps happening underneath and between the rows, instead of being replaced by the solar plant.
- How do agrivoltaics work in practice?
- The panels sit on taller or more widely spaced structures than those of a conventional plant, letting enough light through for the crops and leaving room for machinery and animals. Partial shading reduces heat stress and water loss to evaporation for some crops, while the electricity generated powers the farm or is fed into the grid.
- How many agrivoltaic projects are there in Brazil?
- Agrivoltaico Brasil currently maps 14 Brazilian agrivoltaic projects in operation, under construction, or planned, adding up to 253,138 kWp of installed capacity. The map is updated as new projects are submitted by the community and verified.
- Do agrivoltaics reduce crop yields?
- It depends on the crop. Species that tolerate or benefit from partial shade — many vegetables, forage crops, and pastures — can keep or even increase their yield under the modules, while crops that need full sun tend to lose output. Module height and row spacing are the design parameters that set this balance.
- Which crops appear in Brazilian agrivoltaic projects?
- The projects gathered on this platform include vegetables, pasture with sheep grazing, stingless-bee keeping, fruit growing, and native tree seed production. The choice varies with the regional climate and with the system layout, fixed or tracking.
- How is an agrivoltaic system different from a conventional solar plant?
- In a conventional solar plant the land is dedicated to generation alone and farming stops. In an agrivoltaic system both functions coexist: the structure is designed to preserve agricultural use of the soil, so energy is generated without taking the area out of food production.
- Where can I find studies and data on agrivoltaics in Brazil?
- The Publications section of this platform gathers scientific articles, studies, and news on the topic. Among them is the study “Agrivoltaic Systems in Brazil”, by the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy together with GIZ, the main reference behind the project records on this map.
